It seems like new systems are brought out almost every quarter by the big computer companies such as Dell, Apple, Compaq and Lenovo and keeping up with technological advances can feel like a losing battle. Ask yourself if you actually need these latest systems, and if they will improve your capabilities to a level that warrants spending a chunk of you or your organisations hard earned money on them? Can you just upgrade or repair where needed?
If your system is not broken, the most frequent issue that people experience is a slow running machine. This problem can be encountered for many reasons such as an inadequate hard drive or system memory, unused programs running on your system; and overheating hardware. All of these issues can be fixed at a relatively low cost.
To help you ascertain what area of your system is under performing, Windows includes a number of performance-monitoring tools. You can run these before and after making changes to observe how well they have worked.

- Ascertain which part needs replacing in your system.
- If you do not know the model of your system, look it up here by your service Tag (It will be a seven character code found on your machine, which when inputted into the above link will tell you what system you have).
- If you are feeling confident, safely remove the part from your system that needs replacing and move to instructions 5 through to 6 to find your Dell part.
- If you do not want to remove the offending part from your system, or you do not have the part to hand to get the relevant part number from, either enter the name of the part (for example: laptop keyboard) and model that you got from step 2 above (for example: Latitude E7250) into the Partsfrog search bar, or click on the Partsfrog category that you require and filter the relevant shopping options to get to the part you need.
- If you have safely removed the offending part from your system, you can now get the relevant Dell part number from the hardware. This part number will be contained within a white bar coded label on the part (examples of which are below) and will contain a serial number usually starting with CN (but other derivatives can include DPN / DSN / KR / IE and AC). Ignore the first CN-0 or CN0 - the next five characters are your product code (again examples of this are below).
- Take this part number / product code and enter into the search bar on the Partsfrog website and within the returned results will be the part that you need, or a suggested alternative.
